Fugly Horses,
I wanted to send a picture of my 13.1 hand, 9 year old gelding pony that I bought a couple of months ago. I wanted to get your opinion about his back. I think that it might be a little swayback. I have done a lot of reading up on Bashkir curly horses/ponies because I am in the process of getting him registered as a curly (if the DNA comes back as Dominant/unknown), and the information that I have read on these ponies is that they have a lay back? I know that he is fat. He was put out to pasture for the entire summer before I bought him. I think that that might have something to do with the appearance of a swayback. I am trying to get him in shape and trim him down a bit. He is a great pony with loads of experence and a wonderful temperment. I am just turning 40, and I am a single mom, so I love the fact that he is well trained, loving, and low to the ground, just in case I did get knocked of for some reason.
My dad made so much fun of him when I first got him. He said that I should named my pony, Mongolia and put on a fur cap and jacket so that I could join Genghis Con. He soon changed his mind and loves Turbo now because he realizes that Turbo is pretty much bombproof. Don't get me wrong though he has a whole lot of get up and go in him. Too much at times, but I never feel unsafe on him.
I know that you don't usually give opinions on comfirmation to people that e-mail you with questions, but I really love my pony and am a born again rider (older, a lot stiffer, and am an intermediate rider). I rode alot in my early years and was fortunate enough to have a get little horse back then. I don't know much about confirmation and was hoping that you could take a look, and make some suggestions about if he is swayback, thick and well musled, or just obsese. The only comments I get from my farrier, friends is that he is pretty wooly (his very wavy/curly coat), could carry anyone, and looks like he could pull a tank.
I would really appreciate you opinion.

Nice pony, but you really need to get weight off of him. He won't look near so swaybacked if he'd lose 100+ lbs. Air ferns like this are fun but can be a real challenge to maintain the proper weight. Whatever you do...don't put him on too restrictive of a diet or he could put on weight.
He SO reminds me of my very first horse.

He's very cute! But I agree with Whisper, he definately needs to lose weight. He could founder in that condition. Have you owned horses before?

You can also join the CurlyHaven yahoo group. But I think on the comment you mentioned something about feeding him sweet feed, and that may be part of the problem. He could be insulin resistant, and the molasses and carbs in sweet feed, even small amounts, can cause them to balloon up.
